Raleigh, N.C. (Sept. 1, 2013) – Despite recording 12 shots and five shots on goal, the ETSU women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback at NC State Sunday afternoon.
ETSU played NC State even through the first 29 minutes, when Wolfpack junior midfielder Jessica Baity collected a loose ball on a cross from the right wing to beat ETSU freshman goalkeeper Jasmine Elliott (Preston, England) and give NC State a 1-0 lead.
The Wolfpack extended its first-half lead with sophomore forward Caroline Gentry heading in a ball in the 38th minute following a free kick by senior defender Meagan Proper.
The Buccaneers were unable to overcome the 2-0 halftime deficit, allowing one more NC State goal in the second half.
The Wolfpack outshot ETSU by a slim 13-12 margin.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) paced the Bucs with five shots, including a near-goal midway through the first half that was saved by NC State freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes.
Stelljes, replacing the injured Karly Gustafson in goal, is unbeaten in her first two career starts.
ETSU freshman midfielder Thomai Vardali (Koufalia, Greece) was one of five players in the match to record two or more shots. The Koufalia, Greece, native had a pair of shot attempts for the Bucs.
The Buccaneers will return to action Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Winthrop. The two teams met last season in Johnson City, with ETSU capturing a 4-2 victory.
