Bucs look to build on stellar 2012 campaign

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 29, 2013) – After enjoying a successful exhibition slate, the ETSU men’s soccer team will open regular season play Friday, Aug. 30 in Columbia, S.C. at 7:00 p.m. against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Buccaneers are looking to improve upon last season’s 10-6-4 record, the program’s third consecutive season with 10 or more wins.

ETSU returns seven starters and 16 letterwinners from last season’s squad, including this year’s Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.), and Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas). Last season, Geno set ETSU single-season records for points (30), goals (11), and assists (8) en route to being the first Buccaneer player to win the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year award.

Along with Geno and Woodruff, the Buccaneers lineup features five other seniors, including reigning Atlantic Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland), and 2012 All-Atlantic Sun First Team honoree, Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria). Fubara ranks third all-time at ETSU for minutes played (5,406).

The Buccaneers, welcoming nine newcomers to the mix, have enjoyed a stellar preseason, picking up exhibition wins over UNC-Pembroke and King University before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat at College of Charleston.

SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA

  • The South Carolina Gamecocks return 15 letterwinners and four starters from last season’s squad that finished 5-11-2. The Gamecocks went 2-0 in exhibition play to begin the 2013 campaign, beating Elon and Atlantic Sun opponent, Mercer.
