Pugh selected to Walker Cup Team

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 20, 2013) – For the second time in his career, Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) will play in the Walker Cup as the Buccaneer junior golfer was named to the Great Britain and Ireland Team, which was announced by the R&A on Monday. The 44th Walker Cup will be held Sept. 7-8 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.

Pugh becomes the second ETSU golfer to play in two Walker Cups, joining fellow Buccaneer All-American Rhys Davies. This also marks the sixth Walker Cup Team the Blue and Gold has had a current or former golfer make the squad. Pugh was a member of the 2011 GB&I team that defeated Team USA, and won all three of his matches to help secure the dramatic win at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Scotland.

Pugh, a 2013 All-Atlantic Sun selection, has enjoyed a busy summer as the Welshman played in this year’s Open Championship at Muirfield after securing a place by winning the 2012 European Amateur Championship. Pugh also played in the Irish Open on the European Tour and won the Welsh Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship at Royal Porthcawl. Most recently, Pugh played in the U.S. Amateur Championship where he reached the first round of match play.
