Friday, July 19, 2013
GULLANE, Scotland (July 19, 2013) – ETSU rising junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) missed the cut at the 2013 Open Championship after posting a two-round score of 161 on Friday afternoon at Muirfield.
After recording a first round score of 84 on Thursday, the Buccaneer opened the second round playing well on the front nine much like yesterday; saving par on seven out of nine holes, including a birdie on the fourth hole. The back nine proceeded to be tough again, but the junior was able to birdie 18 to end his stay at the Championship and bring his round total to 77.
In first round play on Thursday, the course played tough and it showed on Pugh’s scorecard as he enjoyed a stretch of seven straight pars on the front nine; however, the ETSU golfer went from 2-over-par to posting a score of 13-over after the first 18 holes of play.
The leader after day two at Muirfield is Miguel Jimenez of Spain who shot an even-par 71 on Friday after posting a 68 on Thursday to bring his leading two-round total to 139.
The cut for the Open Championship is determined by the lowest 70 scores, including ties, in the opening two rounds of the tournament.
Pugh was one of seven amateur golfers to play in the 2013 Open Championship. The Welshman qualified for the Open Championship after winning the 2012 European Amateur Championship last August.
