ETSU edges UCF for sixth consecutive win
Thursday, March 27, 2014
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 27, 2014) - The ETSU women's tennis team closed non-conference play with a solid 4-3 victory at Central Florida Thursday. With the win, the Bucs extended their win streak to six matches.
The Buccaneers (9-7) began the day by taking the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
ETSU then went on to split the singles spots with UCF, with Ana Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) and Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) each pulling out three-set victories.
"It was a gutsy team win today," ETSU head coach Travis Sandlant said. "We were in a winning position, but credit to UCF for fighting back from a few sets down to take those matches to three sets."
Brumit sealed the Bucs' 4-3 win, coming from behind to beat Sofia Baptista, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
"It was a great clinching match from Jessica [Brumit] today," Sandlant said. "She has been in that situation before and has been unsuccessful, but today she pulled it out."
ETSU will look to carry the momentum from Thursday's win into its conference match-up versus North Florida Friday, March 28 at 10:00 a.m.
"This is a great confidence booster for tomorrow," Sandlant said. "We are fit and healthy and ready for a tough match tomorrow."
ETSU and UNF are two of three remaining teams with unbeaten records in Atlantic Sun play. Live stats for the match can be viewed here.
