Wolff shines in pitchers' duel, but Bucs fall, 1-0, to FGCU

FT. MYERS, Fla. (March 16, 2014) - Despite senior Katie Wolff (La Grange, Texas) pitching her fourth complete game of the season, ETSU suffered a narrow, 1-0 setback to Florida Gulf Coast Sunday afternoon in Ft. Myers, Fla. Wolff lowered her ERA to a team-best 2.00 with the effort.
The Bucs' offensive woes continued Sunday as FGCU pitcher Jackie Owen hurled a one-hit, complete-game shutout, leading the Eagles (17-11-1, 4-2) to a 1-0 victory.
Heading into the bottom of the third inning, ETSU and FGCU were knotted in a scoreless deadlock, however, a risky hit-and-run maneuver paid big dividends for the Eagles, allowing FGCU to score the game's lone run.
With two outs and a runner on first, FGCU's Chelsea Zgrabik drove a single through the middle, which proved strong enough to plate Jessica Barnes, who scored from first on the hit-and-run.
The Buccaneers' (10-11, 1-5) best scoring opportunity came in the next half inning, as a two-out single by senior Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) sandwiched between drawn walks by Taylor Carter (Brazil, Ind.) and Wolff loaded the bases for ETSU; however, Casey Horner fouled out to left field to end the inning.
Owen struck out five batters en route to clinching her third complete game of the season and a series sweep for the Eagles.
ETSU will look to bounce back as it hosts Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina for a double-header Wednesday, March 19. The opening game of the double-header will begin at 5:00 p.m., with the second and final game beginning shortly after the completion of Game One. For directions to Betty Basler Field, click here.
