Kingsport native inks professional contract
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2014) – Kingsport native and ETSU soccer standout David Geno has signed to play professionally with the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues’ Professional Division (USL Pro). ETSU Men’s Soccer’s all-time leader for points, goals, and assists, Geno capped his decorated collegiate career by helping lead the Buccaneers to the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship and the program’s second NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.
Over his four-year career at ETSU, Geno garnered numerous honors, including being named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team three times, the NSCAA All-South Region First Team in 2012, and Soccer America’s Preseason All-America Team in 2013. The Dobyns-Bennett High School product also became the first ever ETSU player to be named Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, achieving the feat in 2012 following a historic junior campaign in which he set ETSU single-season records for points (30), goals (12), and assists (8).
A member of ETSU’s outgoing senior class, the winningest class in program history, Geno helped lead the Bucs to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, and again in 2013.
“My four years here at ETSU couldn’t have been any better,” Geno said. “I was fortunate enough to play on some successful teams while I was here, but the best part of it was my teammates. I couldn’t have had a better group of guys to play with over all four years here. They made all of the great experiences here what they were.
“Coach Scott Calabrese, Ian Luya, and David Lilly were also a tremendous help for the team,” Geno said. “They were not only great coaches, but great people and helped prepare us for the next chapters of our lives. I am thankful for my time at ETSU and look forward to whatever soccer may hold for me in the future.”
Pending USSF approval, Geno will join the Charlotte Eagles upon graduating from ETSU this May. Charlotte, a member of the 14-team USL Professional Division, is coached by USL Hall-of-Famer Mark Steffens, along with assistants Steve Shak, Dave Dixon, and Ben Page.
“We are excited to add David Geno to the Charlotte Eagles family,” Dixon said. “He is a perfect fit for the organization on and off the field. David has the ability to score goals, as he proved throughout his career at ETSU. Finding players with the ability to score goals isn’t easy, so we are excited to have found a good one in David Geno.”
Hampered by an injury sustained while playing with the Seattle Sounders’ (MLS) Premiere Development League squad during the summer of 2012, Geno was forced to sit out ETSU’s first three games of the 2013 campaign. Despite the missed time, Geno matched Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) as the team’s leading point-getter, scoring three goals and dishing out four assists.
“David battled through some injuries during his senior season, and that probably hurt his stock a little bit, but he is healthy now and I am excited for him to show what he can do at the next level,” Carolina Sports Agency’s Adam Pastore said. “I am very confident David will make a big impact as a professional soccer player.
Geno will join Aaron Schoenfeld (2008-11) as ETSU Men’s Soccer products playing in the professional ranks. Schoenfeld is currently a member of the Columbus Crew (MLS).
“This is an excellent opportunity for David [Geno],” ETSU interim head coach David Lilly said. “He has been an integral part of ETSU’s success in his four years here. In his first season, he helped us capture a conference championship and it was fitting to watch him lead us to the same feat his senior year.
“David [Geno] is athletic and a natural goal scorer,” Lilly said. “I have no doubt he will continue to develop and flourish with the Charlotte Eagles.”
BY THE NUMBERS
During his playing career, Geno etched his name in ETSU lore, ranking first in program history for nearly every offensive category.
