ETSU falls to nationally-ranked Oklahoma State, 4-2

Friday, January 24, 2014

STILLWATER, Okla. (Jan. 24, 2014) - Competing against its third ranked opponent in the past two weeks, the ETSU men's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-2 setback at No. 51 Oklahoma State Friday, Jan. 24.

The road warrior Bucs (1-3) contested the No. 51 Cowboys (4-0) tightly throughout the match.

Sophomore Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) and freshman Ismael Merino (Lima, Peru) notched singles wins in Friday's match, with Merino winning the No. 5 singles spot, defeating Vasili Caripi, 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Pabon overcame Oklahoma State's Nicolai Ferrigno, 6-3, 6-4.

The Buccaneers, who were facing its third ranked opponent in two weeks, fell just short versus Oklahoma State. ETSU has yet to play at home this season.

"I'm disappointed, because I feel we could have won those matches," ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. "We are young, but this doesn't mean we are allowed to be weak. We need some quick growing up to do or it's going to be a long year."

While the Bucs have competed tightly with several ranked opponents, Zaatini believes his team is capable of much more.

"Our expectations and goals are to be the best," Zaatini said.

Zaatini also remarked that the teams goals include competing with the best teams in the nation, while maintaining its high level of play and challenging schedule.

The Buccaneers will take on No. 58 Arkansas Sunday, Jan. 25 at 12:00 p.m.
