JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 21, 2014) – In accordance with the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service initiative, the ETSU women’s basketball team volunteered some of its time on its off day at the Washington County – Johnson City Animal Shelter and Thrift Store on Monday, Jan. 20.

“Our program’s culture centers around selflessness and service,” said first-year ETSU head coach Brittney Ezell. “Although we suffered a tough loss the day before, it was important for our players to cheerfully give back to our community.”

Each of the 12 members of the team, as well as the coaching staff, took time Monday to lend a helping hand at the local animal shelter and thrift store. The volunteers engaged in various tasks including sorting donations and other housekeeping efforts. The student-athletes’ selfless nature and humility is clearly evident to their head coach.

“I have been so impressed with our players’ resiliency and desire to be part of something bigger than themselves,” said Ezell. “It always lifts your heart and spirit to help others.”
