Sophomore midfield recognized for record-breaking campaign

MACON, Ga. (Oct. 31, 2013) – After being named Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year in her first season at ETSU, midfielder Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) used a stellar sophomore campaign to secure another highly-touted honor, standing out among the league’s most elite players to win the 2013 Atlantic Sun Women’s Soccer Player of the Year award.

Zadrazil paced ETSU’s offensive attack throughout the season, finishing with impressive marks of eight goals and 11 assists—both team-highs, with the latter setting a new program-record for single-season assists.

Along with being tabbed the conference’s most outstanding player, Zadrazil earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team for the second consecutive year.

“We are very proud of Sarah [Zadrazil], and she is very deserving of this honor,” ETSU head coach Adam Sayers said. “The fact that this award is voted on by opposing coaches speaks volumes.

Sarah faced many situations this season in which she was man-marked, double-teamed, or we faced systems of play set up to try to prevent her from being influential. She was still was able to perform very well and receive this recognition from her opponents,” Sayers said.

The St. Gilgen, Austria, native ended the year ranked eighth in the nation for assists and assists per game (0.69), leading the Atlantic Sun in both categories.

“She is a phenomenal player who is extremely talented in every area,” Sayers said. “Technically excellent, she possesses a detailed tactical understanding of her role(s) and the game, and is intelligent in her movement, use of the ball, and defensive positioning. She is physically strong and quick, and most importantly, her attitude to everything we ask her to do, and the game in general, is first class.”

Zadrazil, the Bucs’ leading point-scorer, becomes the third ETSU player to win the league’s Player of the Year award in as many years, joining Genna Petersen (2010) and Ramey Kerns (2011). In Atlantic Sun Women’s Soccer history, ETSU is the only school to produce a Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons.

“As with any individual award in soccer, the team around her have a significant influence on how successful and influential she is, and Sarah would be the first to acknowledge the team’s contribution to this.”

Zadrazil was the only player in the nation to pass for four assists in multiple games, accomplishing the feat Sept. 13 at Alabama A&M and Sept. 28 vs. USC Upstate.

The sophomore midfielder maintained a 3.65 GPA en route to guiding ETSU to its fourth consecutive season with seven or more wins and was one of just three players to be named to both the All-Atlantic Sun First Team and Academic All-Atlantic Sun First Team.

Zadrazil now ranks in the Top 10 in ETSU Women’s Soccer history for goals, assists, and points. Her 21 career assists rank just three shy of Erin Ashton’s (2002-05) program record and place her just five assists short of breaking into the Atlantic Sun Top 10.
