Season-high four goals fuels ETSU as Bucs cruise past Spartans
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 30, 2013) - The ETSU men's soccer team took control of first place in the Atlantic Sun standings after knotching a commanding 4-1 win over USC Upstate Wednesday night. Senior Luis Calzadilla (Caracas, Venezuela) scored two goals, with fellow senior David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) assisting on both.
Senior Jonny Campbell (Johnson City, Tenn.) gave the Bucs (7-5-3, 5-2-0) an early 1-0 lead, converting on a set piece from 40 yards out in the 23rd minute to score his first goal of the season.
The Spartans (1-10-2, 1-5-1) responded, scoring an equalizer before halftime; however, ETSU used three second-half goals to put the match out of reach, sealing its fifth conference win and moving into first place in the league standings ahead of Florida Gulf Coast and Northern Kentucky.
Calzadilla was the goal-scorer for two of the Bucs' three second-half goals, scoring both within a one-minute span.
Less than one minute after Calzadilla's first goal, freshman Joao Ramalho (Monte Santo, Brazil) sent a cross to Geno who flicked the ball from the near post to Calzadilla who then beat USC Upstate goalkeeper Hassan El-Haddad with a header volley.
Ramalho got in the scoring column later in the second half, scoring his first goal of the season after stripping the ball from a USC Upstate player just outside the box.
The Bucs outshot the Spartans by a wide, 15-5 margin, including seven shots on goal.
ETSU will look to maintain its first-place standing when it hosts Lipscomb Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the conference finale.
Prior to the match, ETSU will honor its outgoing senior class, the winningest senior class in program history.
