Coulter ties A-Sun career shutouts record as offense cruises

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2013) – Five different Buccaneers recorded points en route to ETSU notching a commanding 3-0 win over Stetson Sunday afternoon, the team’s third win in the past four tries. With the result, senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) recorded his 23rd career shutout, tying an 18-year Atlantic Sun record for most career shutouts.

The Buccaneers (5-4-3, 3-1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as senior Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria), making his first appearance since suffering an injury Sept. 20, tallied his first goal of the season.

The score came off assists from fellow seniors David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas). Geno fired a cross from the left side to Woodruff, who sent a header to Fubara for a header finish.

The Bucs, who entered intermission maintaining the 1-0 lead, didn’t stop there.

Sophomore Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) added a pair of second-half goals to seal ETSU’s third conference victory. Junior Anthony Wojas (Auxerre, France) picked up an assist on both scores, with Fubara also collecting an assist on the latter goal.

“Today, in particular in the second half, we started to play the way we wanted to play,” ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese said. “We possessed the ball high up the field, we were dangerous, we created chances, and we were patient when we needed to be. I am happy with the direction we are headed.”

With ETSU outshooting the Hatters (1-8-3, 0-3-1) by a 15-10 margin, Coulter registered his conference-best eighth shutout of the season, moving him into a tie with Florida International University’s Jeff Cassar (1992-95) for most career shutouts in A-Sun history. The Dublin, Ireland, native collected three saves en route to recording the 23rd shutout of his career.

“While my name goes down as the one having the record, if our defenders aren’t performing, we’re not going to get those clean sheets,” Coulter said.

Coulter, ETSU’s all-time leader for shutouts, saves, save percentage, and wins, has helped anchor the Bucs’ defense this season, which entered the weekend ranked third in the nation for shutout percentage.

“It is a great feat when you consider the fact that Ryan [Coulter] has only been here three years,” Calabrese said. “It is a credit to him. It is a credit also to his defense and the team that work hard defensively. I’m happy for him.”

The Buccaneers will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Jacksonville Saturday, Oct. 19.

ETSU currently sits in a tie with Lipscomb for second place in the Atlantic Sun.
