Freeman named to the Olerud Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 28, 2013) – The College Baseball Hall of Fame’s John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award list has been released, and ETSU first baseman/left-handed pitcher Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was one of 25 players to be placed among the prestigious group.

Freeman has helped the Bucs with his bat, arm, and glove this season, as the Blue and Gold have posted a record of 24-17, 13-8 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

"These players are contributing to their teams' success in multiple ways," said Sam Dowell, Olerud Award co-chair. "To see the numbers they have compiled throughout the season is very impressive."

The Jonesborough, Tenn. native leads the A-Sun in slugging percentage (.667), ranks second in home runs (10) and total bases (109), is tied for second in doubles (15), tied for third in triples (3), ranks fourth in RBI (45), ranks sixth in batting average (.360), and ranks eighth in hits (58).

The Buccaneer slugger has also registered a team-leading 14 multi-RBI games and is tied for second on the team with 15 multi-hit contests. Freeman also reached base safely in the first 17 games to start the season and has accomplished the feat in 35 of the 41 games for the Blue and Gold. Freeman began the season hitting over .400 in the first 24 games in 2013 and was also named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after hitting .800 (8-10) with one double, one triple, three home runs, seven runs scored and five RBI, along with picking up a save en route to guiding ETSU to a series win over Penn State to open the 2013 campaign. This season, the talented two-way star has also generated two multi-homer games, drove in a career-high six runs in ETSU’s 12-9 come-from-behind win over Northern Kentucky back in early April, and drove in his 100th run of his collegiate career in the 8-2 win versus Kennesaw State on Saturday.

Meanwhile, as Freeman has put together monster numbers with his bat, the left-handed hurler has also been lights out on the mound. Freeman is 4-1 with a 3.92 ERA (18 ER/41.1 IP) and six saves in 18 appearances (three starts) for the Bucs. Freeman – who has converted on all six of his save opportunities this year – is 3-0 with a 0.68 ERA (2 ER/26.1 IP) in his 15 appearances out of the bullpen. Twelve of those relief appearances have been scoreless, while his six saves are tied for second and his 14 games finished are tied for fifth among A-Sun pitchers.

Freeman is the lone player from the A-Sun Conference to be placed on the list, which is made up of players from 18 different conferences.

"It's great to see a number of conferences have more than one player in the running for this award," said co-chair Chris Curbo. "And for a couple of smaller conferences to have multiple representatives show they can compete regardless of their size."

The Olerud Award, presented on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual Night of Champions, recognizes baseball players who excel both on the mound and in the field.
