First competition in Radford since April 2007

RADFORD, Va. (April 26, 2013) - As the ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams continue to prepare for the Atlantic Sun Championships which are set to begin in two weeks, they will travel to Radford, Va. this weekend to compete in the Highlander Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium on the Radford University campus.

Following a brief one-day event last week at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on the University of Louisville campus against a small field of competition, the Buccaneers will face off against a larger host of teams from throughout the southeast at Radford. Though the competition was limited in Louisville, the Blue and Gold was able to turn in a productive and efficient day as it placed first in seven events and saw three student-athletes achieve personal best marks. ETSU hopes to continue the progression this weekend as it awaits competition in the A-Sun Championships May 10-11.

Competition at Cupp Stadium will begin on Friday with the women’s discus throw at noon, with field events continuing until roughly 3 p.m. Track events will follow, beginning with men’s 3000m steeplechase at 4 p.m. and ending with the women’s 10000m run set to commence at 5:30 p.m.

Things will kickoff on Saturday with the men’s discus throw and women’s shot put at 9 a.m., followed by additional field events which are slated to run until about 3 p.m. Track events will coincide with field competition with the men’s 4x100m relay slated to launch at noon. The Highlander Invitational will close with the women’s 4x400m relay which is set to begin at 4:25 p.m.

The Bucs will compete against a larger competition group this weekend including host Radford, Coastal Carolina, Concord, Roanoke, Mars Hill, Salem, Virginia Tech, Lenoir-Rhyne, High Point, Norfolk State, Liberty and Virginia Military Institute.

ETSU will be traveling virtually the entirety of both teams in this final competitive tune-up before the A-Sun Championships. Fine-tuning in a variety of events will be essential in this last regular season competition of the year.

"This is our final tune-up before our conference championship," said ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts, "and we hope to have some improvements over the next two days."

Though a number of student-athletes will see a steady dose of work at the Invite, many will look to continue the momentum they have established in the past few weeks of competition. Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) will aim to build off of her two strong performances in the field including notching a personal best in the discus throw last week at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational. Sophomore Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) will also try to continue her progression following back-to-back solid showings in the long jump.

On the men’s side, the Blue and Gold hope to prolong its momentum in distance events, highlighted by Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) in the 800m run and Angus Baldwin (Tumbi Umbi, Australia) in the 1500m run. Improvement in relay events such as the 4x400m relay will be vital as championship season looms on the horizon.

"Our teams have set an impressive ten school records this year," said Watts, "and we have much to look forward to for the remainder of the season and in the future."
