Lady Bucs lock down seventh straight win

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team celebrated Senior Day with a dominant 7-0 decision over Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Complex. This win makes it seven in a row for the Lady Buccaneers as they improve to 11-4 overall on the spring season and remain unblemished in conference play.

Lone ETSU senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece), who was honored before the match in a special Senior Day ceremony, turned in yet another impressive performance with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set domination against NKU’s Claire Spradlin. Kolovou also teamed with Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) in doubles to take an 8-3 decision over the Norse’s duo of Shana Kleynen and Marta Romeo which secured the doubles point for the Blue and Gold. The senior transfer from Greece improves to 13-1 on the spring season and has won seven straight in singles play.

“The perfect word to describe Antonia is a leader,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “She is a true leader and leads by example. She always shows up, works hard and I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. She is extremely independent and is always ready to go. The way she goes about her business is always as a professional. She isn’t a girl that says much, but when she opens her mouth you are obligated to listen. I don’t share it enough with her on a daily basis, but I am extremely impressed and she is going to be sorely missed.”

“What a great crowd we had turn out today for Antonia’s last senior match,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It’s great to see support from other programs at our matches. We are all very thankful for how much effort Antonia puts in day in and day out. All of our players and coaches wish her the best and we hope that we can finish off her senior year with a championship in a few weeks.”

ETSU also gained a strong showing from freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) who put Kleynen away 6-0, 6-0 in singles and partnered with Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) to take down NKU’s Holly Robinson and Spradlin 8-2 in doubles action. Choo currently stands at 14-1 this spring and has come away victorious in her last 12.

After sweeping the Norse in doubles action to gain the doubles point, the ETSU domination continued into singles play where only two games were surrendered the entire day. Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) started things off with 6-0, 6-0 against NKU’s Robinson. Following Choo’s victory in the same manner, Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) continued the shutout streak against Jamie Diaz.

With the Norse searching for any positive developments, Kristina Abramovich was able to steal a game in the second set against Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn), but Brumit was able stay in control the rest of the way en route to a 6-0, 6-1 decision. After Kolovou’s thrashing of Spradlin, Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) did let one game get away in the first set but responded to gain a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The ETSU women’s tennis team will look to continue the streak when they travel out of conference to Charlottesville, Va., and the University of Virginia to take on the 18th-ranked Cavaliers on Sunday, April 7, at 5 p.m., from the Snyder Tennis Center.
