Men’s tennis opens new tennis complex Friday

Bucs take on A-Sun foe UNF, Dartmouth

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 21, 2013) – The No. 68 ETSU men’s tennis team opens the newly built ETSU Tennis Complex this weekend, hosting No. 75 North Florida and Dartmouth.

ETSU (5-4, 1-0 A-Sun) welcomes UNF (8-6, 2-0 A-Sun) to Johnson City on Friday, playing the first-ever match on the new outdoor courts at 11 a.m. Dartmouth (6-8) comes to town Saturday. First serve against the Big Green is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Friday’s matchup will be ETSU’s first in three weeks. The Bucs’ last contest came March 1, defeating USC Upstate in their conference opener, 5-2.

The Ospreys represent the sixth nationally ranked opponent on ETSU’s schedule. Through five matches, ETSU is 2-3 against the nation’s best, defeating then-No. 71 UL-Lafayette, 4-2, and then-No. 60 Georgia State, 4-0. In fact, seven of the Bucs’ nine matches have come against teams currently inside the ITA national poll. ETSU holds a 3-4 record in those matches.

Sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) boasts the best Buccaneer record heading into this weekend’s play. Ribeiro stands at 19-11 overall, 4-4 dual, contesting all eight of his dual matches at the No. 2. ETSU’s top singles player, Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) stands 12-10 overall, 6-2 dual, with a 2-1 record against nationally ranked opponents. Bandres was named A-Sun Player of the Week in late February after defeating then-No. 29 Nathan Pasha of UGA.

North Florida has won its last six matches, including its first two in A-Sun play by 7-0 shutouts over Kennesaw State and Mercer. UNF’s last loss came February 21, 6-1, to then-No. 20 Baylor. Over the course of its winning streak, the Ospreys have defeated nationally ranked Miami (Fla.) and South Alabama.

UNF’s top singles player, Moritz Buerchner, is 5-7 through the spring season with a 2-6 mark against nationally ranked opponents. All of Buerchner’s 12 singles decisions of come at No. 1. Julien Belair boasts the best spring record of 9-5.

Dartmouth plays at Radford on Friday before heading to the Tri-Cities and has lost its last two. Tuesday, the Big Green were swept, 7-0, by UNC Wilmington before being edged, 4-3, at Elon.

Justin Chan – DU’s No. 5 and 6 singles player – carries a team-best 4-1 record in five completed dual matches. Chan has won his last two, is 2-1 at the No. 5 and 2-0 at No. 6. Xander Centenari is Dartmouth’s No. 1 singles player, 8-10 overall, 3-3 dual. Centenari has also won his last two, is 2-2 at the No. 1 and 1-1 at the No. 2.
