Buccaneer freshman duo help guide Bucs to series win at USC Upstate

MACON, Ga. (March 18, 2013) – Freshmen Griffin Krieg (Nashville, Tenn.) and Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) played a vital role in helping the ETSU baseball team win the series at USC Upstate, and on Monday the Buccaneer rookie duo landed Atlantic Sun Pitcher and Player of the Week honors.

Overall, ETSU (12-5, 2-1 A-Sun) won three of its five games last week, and moved into a tie for first-place in the A-Sun standings after taking two of three from the Spartans in Spartanburg.

Krieg went 1-0 and didn’t allow a run in 11.0 innings of action (two appearances/one start) this past week for the Bucs. The right-handed hurler got the Bucs out of the gate strong in conference play as he held USC Upstate – the A-Sun’s second best hitting team – scoreless on four hits in eight innings of work in Friday’s 8-0 win. Krieg, who walked two and struck out one at USC Upstate, battled in a 1-0 game all night against senior righty Brandon Lee, as ETSU didn’t score its seven runs until the ninth inning. In addition, Krieg also held Gaither Bumgardner, the reigning A-Sun Player of the Year, hitless in four at-bats. Prior to Friday’s start, Krieg tossed three scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief on Tuesday night versus Winthrop. Krieg struck out three and didn’t issue a walk against the Eagles.

Meanwhile, as Krieg was holding teams scoreless, Taylor was giving opposing pitchers fits at the plate.

Taylor enjoyed an outstanding week as he hit a blistering .458 (11-24) with three doubles, eight runs scored, and five RBIs. The Buccaneer outfielder just missed tying the school record for hits in a single game after his impressive 5-for-6 effort in the 20-9 win at UNC Asheville on Wednesday. Taylor, who was a perfect 4-for-4 with runners in scoring position against the Bulldogs, also drove in four runs and scored four times in the 11-run victory. Over the weekend at USC Upstate, Taylor hit .429 (6-14) with two doubles, four runs scored, and one walk. Taylor went 3-for-5 with a run scored on Saturday, and followed that up with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in the 10-4 series clinching victory on Sunday.

Krieg and Taylor become the third ETSU combo to sweep the A-Sun honors as Matthew Scruggs (Player) and Bo Reeder (Pitcher) accomplished the feat back on March 14, 2011, while C.J. Lee (Player) and Brandon Langston (Pitcher) won the awards on March 26, 2007. This also marks the first Pitcher of the Week honor for the Bucs since Reeder received the award back in 2011, while Taylor is the second ETSU player to win the accolade this season as Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) took home the first weekly on Feb. 18.

The Bucs are back in action Wednesday night when ETSU concludes its five-game road swing at Winthrop at 6 p.m. ETSU returns to Thomas Stadium this weekend when the Blue and Gold host No. 26 Florida Gulf Coast in a three-game conference series, beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
