Bucs take two-of-three from Wake in doubles, four from Elon in singles

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2013) – The ETSU women’s tennis team had a fantastic start to the Wake Forest Winter Classic on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., defeating the ACC’s Wake Forest in two-of-three doubles matches before taking four-of-seven singles matches from Elon.

The three-day tournament began at 1 p.m., for the Buccaneers, facing off against Wake at its home tennis center. Freshmen doubles sensations Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) and Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) were downed in the top match, but were avenged on courts two and three with a pair of ETSU victories. Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) and junior Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) knocked off Karen Forman and Xue Zhang, 8-4, while newcomers Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) and Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) put out Brigita Bercyte and Catherine Roach, 8-1, on court three.

“Winning two out of three doubles matches against an ACC team shows that what we are doing in practice is paying off,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “We later backed up that performance as a team in singles, which was pleasing to see.”

The Buccaneers went seven-on-seven with the Phoenix, earning wins from Gerbasi, Choo, Dahbi and Espana. Gerbasi rolled through Bryn Khoury, 6-1, 6-4, and Choo held off Barbora Lazarova in a second-set tiebreak, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), as each earned redemption from their doubles loss. Dahbi came back from dropping her opening set to defeat Maria Camara Ruiz, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Espana played a tight match but outlasted Taylor Casey 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

“Out fitness really showed today, and the girls dug deep for the win against Elon.”

Day two of the Wake Forest Winter Classic begins at noon for ETSU on Sunday, squaring off with Radford in doubles followed by the Demon Deacons in singles.
