ETSU eyeing third straight win

BATON ROUGE, La. (Dec. 12, 2012) – Last year the ETSU women’s basketball team were seconds away from pulling off the upset win over LSU. On Thursday night, the Blue and Gold will seek revenge as the Lady Bucs head to Baton Rouge to take on the Lady Tigers inside the Maravich Center.

Game time is set for 8 p.m. (Eastern) and will be televised in the Louisiana market on Cox Sports Television.

LAST TIME OUT

ETSU (2-2) used strong free throw shooting and a dominating effort on the boards to secure its second straight win as the Lady Bucs defeated Morehead State, 57-53, back on Dec. 2 inside Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky. The Blue and Gold went 23-of-27 from the free throw line – including an impressive 12-for-14 showing in the final minute of play – to secure the four-point road win. In addition, the Lady Bucs out-rebounded the Eagles by 20, 46-26, courtesy of a game-high 10-rebound performance by newcomer Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.). Meanwhile, junior Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) netted a team-high 15 points, while sophomore Maria Bond (Macon, Ga.) just missed a double-double – posting 10 points and tying a career high with nine rebounds.

ABOUT LSU

The Lady Tigers enter Thursday’s game with a 4-3 record and are coming off a heartbreaking 66-64 overtime loss to Tulane on Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge. LSU led by seven points midway through the second half and held a 60-55 advantage with less than four minutes remaining, but the Green Wave rallied to cap off the come-from-behind win in the extra stanza.

LSU’s roster only features 10 players – four of which are freshman – with the Lady Tigers being led by 6-foot, 5-inch junior forward Theresa Plaisance. Plaisance is only one of six players who are averaging double figures in minutes played and is posting 18.7 points and nine rebounds per game. Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers feature a strong guard combo as senior Adrienne Webb is averaging 13.4 points and freshman Danielle Ballard is netting 13.1 points per contest.

The Lady Tigers made their 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and were picked to finish sixth (out of 14 teams) in the SEC.

SERIES HISTORY

This marks only the second meeting between the two programs, with LSU defeating the Lady Bucs in overtime, 71-68, last season in Johnson City. Despite leading by six with 10 minutes remaining and by four with a little over two minutes left in regulation, ETSU couldn’t put the Lady Tigers away, as Swayze Black’s jumper at the buzzer sent the game into overtime and eventually lifted LSU to the three-point win. Sophomore Amy Duke (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Mitchell added eight points and 12 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. The Lady Bucs netted 10 three-pointers – three each from Duke and Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) – but ETSU was out-rebounded by 16, 51-35. In the final minute of regulation, the Lady Tigers registered five rebounds, along with three in the last 10 seconds.
