Women’s tennis readies for heavy competition at Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic

Kolvou, Choo, Gerbasi to represent ETSU

SARASOTA, Fla. (Nov. 8, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis team puts together the finishing touches of its fall season at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center this weekend, competing at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.

The tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m., with first and second round singles and doubles play. The 32-man singles bracket and 16-team doubles draw will consist of student-athletes from some of the nation’s top women’s tennis programs. Those programs include six teams who were nationally ranked at the end of last season, highlighted by last year’s NCAA champion, Florida. The other teams, along with their rankings from last year, are: No. 11 Alabama, No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 24 Tennessee, No. 41 Oklahoma State and No. 60 Memphis. ETSU and Mississippi State are the two teams who were not in the ITA’s top 75 at the end of the 2012 spring season.

Representing the Buccaneers will be senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece), redshirt freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malasia) and freshman Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela). Both Kolovou and Gerbasi are in their first season with ETSU, while Choo is in her first competitive season after redshirting in 2011-12.

A portion of the tournament’s proceeds benefit the The V Foundation for cancer research.
