ETSU duo upsets No. 4 seed from Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Oct. 19, 2012) – Redshirt freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and true freshman Anna Gerbasi (Mexico City, Mexico) won a pair of doubles matches on Friday at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, upsetting the No. 4 seed from Purdue along the way.

Gerbasi and Choo took on the seeded duo of Daniela Vidal and Lynda Xepoleas from the host school in the main draw’s opening round, and pulled out an impressive, 8-3, victory. In the second round, the ETSU tandem stayed hot, defeating Miami’s (OH) Nimisha Mohan and Alix Thurman, 8-5, to earn a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) also battled her way to a good result in the main singles draw, defeating Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the round of 32. Choo was ousted in the opening round after earning her spot with wins in Thursday’s qualifiers, falling to Mohan 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Gerbasi was also eliminated in singles on Friday, losing to No. 15 Jessica Stiles from Kentucky, 6-0, 6-4.

“We got off to a great start in doubles,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It’s always good to compete with the top teams and come away with a win.

“Antonia did what she always does, and took care of business in singles. Tomorrow is a big day and we have some great opportunities in front of us.”

The young Buccaneer duo of Gerbasi and Choo is scheduled to face the No. 6 seed of Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira from Vanderbilt on Saturday at 9 a.m.
