SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 18, 2012) – The ETSU volleyball team will be gunning for its fifth straight win when the Bucs head to Spartanburg for an Atlantic Sun showdown Friday night at USC Upstate. Game time is set for 7 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS

ETSU (16-8, 7-3 A-Sun) cruised to a sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) at Kennesaw State on Tuesday night behind the strong play of Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.). Devine recorded her conference-leading 15th double-double after registering 16 kills and 17 digs, both of which were match highs. In addition, Devine also moved past Jessica Manchester (1992-95) for fifth all-time on the ETSU kills list. Meanwhile, Gesell recorded double digit kills for the fourth straight match after finishing with a career-best 15. As a team, the Bucs held the Owls to a .129 hitting percentage (29-17-93), while the Blue and Gold finished with a .286 attack percentage (49-19-105) – including a .405 clip (18-3-37) in the third set.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

USC Upstate (9-13, 4-6) is coming off a sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) at Mercer Tuesday night. Freshman outside hitter Kayla Eversgerd led the way with 17 kills and 20 digs in the three-set win over the Bears and Lexi Gober added 32 assists and 16 digs. The Spartans have won back-to-back games and three of their last four, while eight of Upstate’s nine wins have been in three sets. Overall, USC Upstate ranks second in the A-Sun in service aces (1.47) and digs (18.04) per set, while sophomore middle blocker Kayla McAvoy ranks fourth in kills per set (3.38) and fifth in attack percentage (.319).

SERIES HISTORY

Since joining the A-Sun in 2005, the Bucs have won seven of the nine matches against the Spartans, including four straight. Back in September, Devine and Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) tallied double-doubles en route to ETSU sweeping USC Upstate inside Brooks Gym. Devine posted 15 kills and 19 digs, while Rice pitched in with 16 kills and 12 digs. The Bucs tied a season high with nine service aces and held the Spartans to a .136 attack percentage. Ironically, it was Devine and Rice who generated double-doubles to lift ETSU to a 3-1 win over Upstate last year in Spartanburg. Devine finished with 18 kills and 18 digs, while Rice added 13 kills and 19 digs. The Bucs out-blocked USC Upstate, 10-2, and also held the Spartans to a .176 attack percentage.
