Bandres, Ordeig, Ribeiro through to semifinals after first day of UVA Fall Classic

Friday, October 05, 2012

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Oct. 5, 2012) – The ETSU men’s tennis team saw half of its singles entries advance unscathed, with Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela), Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) and Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) advancing to their respective semifinals on day one of the UVA Fall Classic.

Ribeiro, competing in the orange flight, stretched his winning streak to six games, while Bandres, competing in the black flight as the No. 1 seed, rolled through opening day without dropping a single set. Ordeig won his first round matchup in straights, and then took down No. 3 seed Lee Christofides of Coastal Carolina 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 to earn his spot in the White draw’s semifinals.

Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini was pleased with the team’s overall performance, but admitted that it let some matches get away.

“We played well, and our guys fought hard, but we let some matches get out of our hands,” Zaatini said. “I thought the highlights were Ricardo Pabon, who his first match in a tiebreak and bounced back to win a tough consolation match, and Roger, who played really well and came back from a one-set deficit.

“Rogerio kept up his steady play, and has been our on-court tournament leader.”

Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia) fell to Anton Andersson of William & Mary 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the first round of the Blue Flight, but earned a back draw victory against Aaron Gomez of Virginia Tech 7-5, 7-6.
