Women’s tennis captures singles and doubles titles, dominates USC Upstate Fall Classic

Sunday, September 23, 2012

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Sept. 23, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis team wrapped up the USC Upstate Fall Classic by winning both the singles and doubles titles on Sunday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

The duo of Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) took home the doubles championship, defeating the tournament’s top-seeded team from Wofford in Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia, 9-7. Choo and Espana were the No. 4 seed of the 16-team field, taking down three Terrier teams and one duo from Presbyterian en route to the title.

Espana, Choo and sophomore Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) made up three of the four semifinalists in the singles bracket, with Espana and Brumit being forced to take on one another for a spot in the final. The newcomer outdueled Brumit 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to earn her way into the final, while Choo defeated USC Upstate’s Constanze Kuerten in three sets 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 to setup an all-ETSU final. That matchup will take place later this week in Johnson City.

"The whole team had a great weekend," ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. "We got plenty of matches under our belts, and the girls came away with what I expected out of them. I put a little more pressure on a few of them before the event started, and they showed me they could stand up and respond.

"Also, it's always better when you have a great coach by your side," Sandlant expressed about fellow assistant Jonatan Bertane. "Hats off to him this weekend."

The ETSU women’s tennis team heads to Blacksburg, Va. next weekend, continuing fall action at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational.
