ETSU in search of its first 5-0 start in school history

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2012) – Having a full week off the game field since its win over Radford, the ETSU women’s soccer team gets back to action and looks to improve to 5-0 on Sunday when it travels to the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium in Murfressboro, Tenn. to take on MTSU at 2 p.m. EDT.

ETSU (4-0-0) is currently tied for its best start in program history, having won its first four games of the season only one other time in 2003. That year, the Lady Bucs finished 12-6-0 (7-4-0 SoCon), and set the program record for wins in a season. Last year’s ETSU squad tied that mark, going 12-5-1 (7-1-1 A-Sun) and earning a share of its first regular season championship.

Last weekend, the Lady Bucs opened up the home season with matchups against Presbyterian and Radford. In the Friday night home opener against Presbyterian, junior Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.) scored two goals in regulation, while redshirt sophomore transfer Andie Stone (Austin, Texas) knocked in the golden goal en route to a, 3-2, victory. Kerns put in her third goal of the weekend on Sunday, netting the game’s only score in the 27th minute as ETSU shutout the Highlanders, 1-0.

Following her three-goal weekend, Kerns took home A-Sun Player of the Week honors. The Kings Mountain, N.C. native leads the Lady Bucs with four goals so far this season, while freshman Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) has tallied four assists to lead the team in that category. Three of Kerns’ goals have been assisted by the Austrian freshman.

MTSU (2-2-0) played Vanderbilt on Friday, falling to the Commodores, 2-0. Dana Schwartz netted both goals, and was assisted each time by Cheyna Williams. The Blue Raiders gave up a goal in each half, but held fairly even in the shot count with Vanderbilt holding a, 12-9, advantage for the game. MTSU’s other three results include wins against Jacksonville State and Alabama A&M, and a loss to Ole Miss.

The all-time series favors ETSU 3-2-1. The Lady Bucs defeated the Blue Raiders in their first three meetings from 1997-99, but MTSU is 2-0-1 since then. ETSU’s only win at MTSU came, 1-0, on Sept. 13, 1998.
