Bucs continue road swing Tuesday night at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. (Aug. 27, 2012) – Coming off a successful opening weekend at the Gamecock Invitational, the ETSU volleyball team continues its road swing when the Bucs take on Presbyterian on Tuesday night at the Templeton Center. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.

ETSU (3-1) defeated UNC Asheville, Temple, and Akron this past weekend in Columbia, S.C., while junior outside hitter Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) and sophomore middle blocker Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) received all-tournament honors. Following, her all-tournament team accolade, Devine was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Monday.

The Bucs started the season with a comeback win over Asheville in five sets, while sweeping Temple. From there, the Blue and Gold took down Akron, 3-1, and despite dropping the first two sets to South Carolina, ETSU battled back to force a decisive fifth set. Unfortunately, with the Bucs trailing 9-8, ETSU couldn’t get over the hump as the Gamecocks closed out the match on a 6-1 run to claiming the championship.

Through the first weekend of play, ETSU currently leads the Atlantic Sun in blocks (41) and blocks per set (2.41), while ranking second in attack percentage (.267).

Individually, Devine leads all conference players with 72 total kills, while ranking second with 4.24 kills per set.  Meanwhile, Hardy and freshman Khadijah Wiley (Columbus, Ga.) rank one-two in blocks. Hardy is the league leader with 1.29 blocks per set and Wiley is averaging 1.06. Senior Kayla Williams (El Paso, Texas) is second among A-Sun peers with 10.56 assists per set.

As the Bucs head into the non-conference match with Presbyterian on a positive note, the Blue Hose opened the weekend losing three of their four matches in Laramie, Wyoming. Presbyterian defeated Eastern Washington (3-0), but fell to Seattle (3-1), Wyoming (3-1), and San Francisco (3-0).

The Blue Hose – who were picked to finish eighth in the Big South – are led by senior outside hitter Presley Mabrey. Mabrey was named to the preseason all-conference team and is currently averaging 2.8 kills per set this season. As a team, the Blue Hose averaged 10.86 kills per set and 1.93 blocks in their opening weekend at the Wyoming Invite.

ETSU is looking for revenge as Presbyterian rallied for a five-set win over Buc last season inside the Templeton Center. Devine recorded one of her 16 double-doubles on the season after finishing with 20 kills and 14 digs, while Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) compiled 13 kills, four digs, and four blocks. Tuesday marks the third meeting between the two schools, with the series being knotted at one.
