Buccaneer tandem help guide Blue and Gold to 3-1 mark

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Aug. 26, 2012) – Junior outside hitter Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) and sophomore middle blocker Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) helped guide the ETSU volleyball team to three wins at the season opening Gamecock Invitational, and at the conclusion of play late Saturday night the Buccaneer tandem were selected to the all-tournament team.

Devine kicked off the season with three double-doubles after finishing the four matches with 72 kills and 50 digs, along with tallying 10 block assists. The Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year selection began the campaign with a 20-kill, 15-dig performance in the 3-2 win over UNC Asheville on Friday, while finishing with her third straight double-double on the year with 25 kills and 15 digs in the 3-1 victory over Akron on Saturday. The 25 kills and 15 digs were one shy of tying career highs for Devine, while posting an attack percentage of .385 in those two matches.

Meanwhile, Hardy began the year with impressive numbers after kicking off the season by tying career highs with 15 kills and seven total blocks against Asheville. The career mark for blocks in a match didn’t last long as the Kingsport, Tenn. native tallied nine total blocks versus Temple, which the Bucs defeated, 3-0. Hardy also finished with seven kills against the Owls. On Saturday, Hardy had eight kills, six digs, and four total blocks in the 3-1 victory over Akron, before completing the tournament with 13 kills against South Carolina.

South Carolina’s Cara Howley claimed the tournament MVP award, while Paige Wheeler and Christina Vereb also earned all-tourney nods. Joining Devine and Hardy, was Akron's Tina Demetrius and Temple's Elyse Burkert.

The Bucs return to action on Tuesday evening when ETSU travels to Presbyterian for a non-conference match. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
