Yang, Wilson lead Bucs to victory

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 18, 2012) – The ETSU men’s soccer team closed out the preseason by defeating the College of Charleston, 2-0, on Saturday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

Senior Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.) booted in a free kick after a foul was called on the Cougars just outside the top of the 18-yard box, while redshirt freshman forward Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) capped off the scoring with a 69th-minute blast. The two sides took 11 shots and four shots on goal apiece, but ETSU found the back of the net twice through the second half in its final exhibition of the 2012 season.

“We started off a little sluggish in the first half, but made some adjustments and had a very good second half,” ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese said. “The effort from the team was excellent, and we implemented much more of the concepts we’ve been working on through the preseason. We also got the result, and it’s important to do that to build confidence.”

After Charleston took down No. 33 Central Florida, 2-1, on Tuesday night in its first exhibition, the Cougars were shut down by the ETSU defense which saw junior goalkeeper Ronnie Hreha (Asheville, N.C.) make three saves to keep CofC off the scoreboard.

ETSU opened the scoring in the 51st minute, taking advantage of a set piece after the Cougars were called for a foul and Robbie Benson was cautioned with the game’s first yellow card by referee Jonathan Glover. Yang lined up to take the free kick from a few yards off the penalty area, and bent a shot toward the lower-left corner which hit off the foot of goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk and bounced through to put the Buccaneers on top, 1-0.

The Bucs padded the lead exactly 18 minutes later. Freshman Dalton Guzman (Knoxville, Tenn.) fed Wilson with a through ball down the right side of the field which sparked the freshman on a breakaway. With only substituted goalkeeper Alex Young to beat, the Memphis, Tenn. native took a shot at the lower-right corner which beat a diving Young to pad the Buccaneer lead.

ETSU held off the College of Charleston’s attack the remainder of the way through, ending the preseason at 1-1-0.

The regular season gets underway Friday, Aug. 24, when ETSU visits Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. at 7 p.m. The Bucs’ home opener comes Tuesday, Aug. 28, against UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
