Legendary coach adds to legacy with 28th Coach of the Year selection
MACON, Ga. (April 27, 2012) – After the ETSU men’s track and field team won its third Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championship last weekend, the A-Sun announced its annual awards as voted on by the league’s coaches, with Dave Walker being selected Coach of the Year.
The track and field honors are Walker’s 13th of his historic coaching career and his third since ETSU started competing in the A-Sun during the 2005-06 season. The living legend has also been named Cross Country Coach of the Year 15 times, making this his 28th overall Coach of the Year selection.
“It’s very nice to be recognized my last time around,” said Walker, who will end his 50-plus-year stint with ETSU at the conclusion of the season. “My last month here is going to be June, and this is a very nice way to go out. I appreciate the conference coaches having that much confidence in me. I’ve had a few of these down the road, but good athletes make a good coach. When you have a group of great athletes, it makes it easy to get awards like this.”
The award comes in the aftermath of ETSU’s 2.5-point victory over Kennesaw State on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. Heading into the men’s 4x400m relay, the Bucs led the Owls by 0.5 of a point and stretched across the finish line ahead of KSU by less than a half second. ETSU’s 223 total points to KSU’s 220.5 was the slimmest margin of victory the A-Sun had ever seen in its 17-year history of the event.
The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams will next compete at the Bob Pollock Spring Invitational, hosted by Clemson University at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex on May 5 in Clemson, S.C.
