Eight Catamount pitchers combined to allow just four hits and one run on the night, including seven scoreless innings by the bullpen. Starting pitcher Adam Curtis (5-1) earned the victory after allowing one hit and one run in two innings of work. ETSU (19-21) starter Kuehl McEachern (Mt. Dora, Fla.) Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.), Zach Thompson (Johnson City, Tenn.), and Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) had the only other hits of the night for the Bucs. Freeman has now reached base in 34 straight contests.
Western Carolina jumped out to an early lead after plating four runs on three hits, while sending eight batters to the plate in the first inning. Bradley Strong led off the inning with a triple to right center and then scored after the next batter Heffley recorded a sacrifice fly. After a walk and a hit batter, McEachern got Adam Martin to ground into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Then, Hoyle laced a RBI double to left center. Attaway followed with a two-run double into right center to give the Catamounts a 4-0 lead.
ETSU got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning with a run on a RBI double by Scruggs. The Bucs started a two-out rally when Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch. Scruggs then delivered an RBI double into the gap in left center – scoring Pratt from first and to make the score 4-1.
After the first two WCU batters got aboard to start the third inning, ETSU brought Rice in to pitch with runners on first and second. Rice forced Martin to ground into a double play, leaving Tyler White in scoring position. Then, Hoyle singled through the right side to score White, making the score 5-1.
Western Carolina added its final run in the top of the fourth. Julian Ridings got the first hit of the inning batting a double to left center field. With two outs, Heffley stepped up to hit a RBI single to right field -- leaving the final score 6-1.
