Men’s golf finishes second at A-Sun Championship

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

BRASELTON, Ga. (Apr. 18, 2012) – Trailing by 10-shots entering Wednesday’s final round, the ETSU men’s golf team made a charge that came up just a little shy as No. 8 North Florida edged the Bucs by four strokes at the Atlantic Sun Championship on The Legends Course at Chateau Elan.

ETSU fired the lowest team score of the day, but the 10-shot deficit to start the day was a little too much to overcome. The Bucs fired a final round 296 (+8) becoming the only team in the field to shoot less than 300 on the day. UNF shot a final round 302 (+14) to capture its second A-Sun title. The Ospreys finished at +11 (287-286-302—875) with the Bucs just four back at +15 (288-295-296—879).

No. 41 Kennesaw State finished in third at +30, while Florida Gulf Coast (+32) and Stetson (+43) rounded out the top-five. Mercer came in sixth (+50) followed by USC Upstate (+54), Jacksonville (+59), Lipscomb (+61) and Belmont (+69).

The Bucs had four players finish in the top-11 on the individual leaderboard, led by redshirt senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England), who finished tied for second at 1-under-par (68-76-71—215). Enoch was just one of four golfers in the field to finish under-par for the tournament. Stetson’s Sam Ryder won the individual title by two shots at 3-under (74-68-71—213). Enoch along with North Florida teammates Kevin Aylwin and Sean Dale finished two-shots back in second place.

ETSU sophomore Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) finished in sixth place at +2 (70-75-73—218). Freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) finished tied for seventh at +5 (73-70-78—221). Meanwhile, Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) finished tied for 11th at +9 (77-74-74—225).
