NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (April 9, 2012) – With freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) posting the day’s best individual round thanks to a 5-under-par 67, the ETSU women’s golf team opened first round play at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships with a record-setting performance and ended the day atop the team leaderboard Monday at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.

Wahl, who finished the day with a three-stroke edge on the individual leaderboard, carded five birdies on the day – four on the back nine – to tie the all-time A-Sun individual 18-hole record with former Buccaneer Laura Jansone (2008). Meanwhile, the Bucs’ 18-hole team total also broke the program record by two strokes and is tied for the fourth-best in A-Sun history.

The Bucs currently lead Kennesaw State by two strokes and three-time defending champion Stetson by four.

“We are playing our own games and adding it all up afterwards,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “Gabriella expects to be the best and is striving for it. She doesn’t look around at what else is going on, but rather just focuses on her own game and wants the Bucs to be the best.”

Wahl’s teammate Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), the 2011 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, aided the Buccaneers charge with a one-under-par 71, with two birdies on the back nine to put the sophomore in a tie for fourth place.

Other ETSU results included a tie for eighth by senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain), while sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) and junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) are tied for 21st and 36th, respectively.

Alexandria Buelow, the defending individual medalist, posted the best Hatter round at two-under to tie Kennesaw State’s Ket Preamchuen for second place. Preamchuen’s sister, Kaew, fired an even-par 72 for sole possession of seventh place moving into Tuesday’s round. Buelow’s teammate Lauren Cate, a 2011 Second Team All-Conference member, opened the tournament at one-under-par to tie for fourth.
