Track and field looks to keep thriving at Yellow Jacket Invitational

Thursday, March 29, 2012

ATLANTA (March 29, 2012) – After splitting the rosters among three meets last weekend, the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams will all be heading to Atlanta this weekend for the two-day Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech at the Georgia C. Griffin Track Facility.

The meet gets underway on Friday evening with the men’s and women’s hammer throw at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s and women’s 5000m at 9 p.m. All other events will take place on Saturday, starting with the men’s and women’s shot put and javelin throw at 10:30 a.m., and concluding with the 4x400m relay at 4:30 p.m.

Joining ETSU and Georgia Tech in Atlanta will be men’s and/or women’s teams from Air Force, Chattanooga, Georgia, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, MTSU, Michigan, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

Last weekend, the Bucs spread the men’s and women’s squads between three different meets. ETSU sent its jumpers, throwers, multi-event athletes and distance runners to Athens, Ga., for the Georgia Relays, its mid-distance and additional distance runners to Nashville, Tenn., for the Black and Gold Invitational, and its sprinters to Cullowhee, N.C., for the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic.

Freshman Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) highlighted the three-meet weekend by qualifying for the USATF Jr. National Championships in the 2000m steeplechase by completing the event in 6:16.49. Chase joined fellow freshmen K’Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jadon Short (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) as the three Buccaneers to have qualified for the Jr. National Championships this year. Scott qualified during the indoor season in the heptathlon and Short in the long jump.

The Bucs also took first place in one event at each of the three meets, as Marek Navratil (Oloumouc, Czech Republic) won the high jump at the Georgia Relays, Anja Claussnitzer (Chemnitz, Germany) won the 800m at the Black and Gold Invitational and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) took first place in the 100m at Western Carolina.

ETSU will look to build on these strong performances with another good showing in Atlanta.
