Pelton, Schoenfeld, Westbrook to be honored as ETSU’s three departing seniors

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 31, 2011) – Fresh off having clinched its spot in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Tournament, the ETSU men’s soccer team is set to celebrate Senior Night inside Summers-Taylor Stadium with its regular season finale against Appalachian State on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.

ETSU (9-5-3, 3-4-1 A-Sun) entered Friday needing to defeat USC Upstate in order to earn its place in the conference tournament. The Spartans had a lot to play for as well, needing a win or tie against the Bucs to earn their first trip into the postseason tournament.

The entire first half seemed to have favored ETSU, as the Buccaneers dominated the shot count, 17-4, and took the game’s first 12 shots. None of those attempts found the back of the net; however, Upstate capitalized on its very first scoring chance when Michael Rankin-Byrne slipped by the ETSU defense and beat redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) to give the Spartans the lead on their very first shot of the match.

With 16 minutes remaining in the contest, and ETSU still trailing, 1-0, the Bucs desperately needed a goal to at least get into overtime for another chance to score. Junior Alesi Osorio (Austin, Texas) provided the late game magic, scoring his third goal of the season to equalize the match and buy the Bucs more time for a second.

They would not need it, as senior Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored what proved to be the game-winner just 2:27 after Osorio’s equalizer. ETSU held on the rest of the way, earning the right to defend its A-Sun crown and booting the Spartans from their first conference tournament.

The Bucs will enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed after Mercer defeated Belmont on Sunday to jump to fourth in the conference standings with 11 points. The Bears’ victory also vanquished Belmont’s hopes of a tournament title, as the Bruins finished the A-Sun season at 2-4-2 and two points back of ETSU.

Appalachian State (8-4-4, 3-2-2 SoCon) will enter Johnson City with an impressive record, but have not scored a goal in any of its last four games. The Mountaineers are 0-2-2 in through their current lull, getting shutout by Davidson, Wofford, Furman and the College of Charleston.

Sean Dreybus has led the Mountaineers on the attack this season with a team-high six goals to amass a team-leading 12 points. Appalachian State is 3-2-0 on the road this year, and is looking to close out its regular season on a high note against ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese’s squad.

In the all-time series, the Bucs and Mountaineers are 1-1-0 with both teams having won at the other’s home stadium. Their last meeting came almost exactly a year prior to the start of Tuesday night’s game, Nov. 2, 2010, with ETSU pulling out a 1-0 overtime victory in front of the Mountaineer fans.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors Blake Pelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Jaron Westbrook (Round Rock, Texas) and Schoenfeld will be honored as part of the Senior Night ceremonies in front of the home crowd.
