ETSU prepares for rematch with Bears
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 29, 2011) – The ETSU women’s soccer team is scheduled for a rematch, as the Lady Bucs will take on the No. 6 seed Mercer Bears in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Friday, Nov. 4, in Ft. Myers Fla. at 4 p.m.
The Bears played in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament on Friday night against No. 3 Jacksonville. The Dolphins scored an early first half goal, but Mercer responded with a score in the opening minutes of the second half to take the game to overtime.
Neither teamed scored through both overtime periods and the match went to penalty kicks. JU missed its first attempt to fall in an early hole and never climbed out as Mercer advanced into the semifinals with a, 4-2, shootout advancement.
ETSU (12-4-1, 7-1-1 A-Sun) met Mercer in both teams’ final game of the regular season. The Lady Bucs went down a goal early but responded with two second half goals, capped by an 81st minute game-winner by sophomore Ramey Kerns (Kings Mountain, N.C.), to clinch a share of their first A-Sun regular season championship.
Florida Gulf Coast received the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament via their head-to-head record against ETSU and JU, but the Lady Bucs 1-1-0 record was good enough for the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals.
