Three Buccaneers Advance at USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships

Gille, Akser and Bonnevalle roll through to second round

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (October 20, 2011) – The ETSU men’s tennis team began play at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Thursday at Tennessee’s Goodfriend Tennis Center and Knoxville Racquet Club, with seniors Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium), Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) advancing through to the second round of singles play.

A total of nine Buccaneers traveled to Knoxville for the Regional Tournament, but the Bucs finished Thursday with a 3-6 record in singles play and a 2-2 record in doubles first round action.

Of the three Bucs advancing to the second round, it was Bonnevalle who came away with the day’s first victory. The senior defeated Dayton’s Collin Bernier 6-2, 6-3 as ETSU got the tournament off on the right track.

Gille, seeded in the 17-32 range, hit the court just before noon to take on Kentucky’s Maks Gold. As his teammate did earlier in the day, Gille won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to earn his spot in Friday’s second round.

Akser, the final Buc to advance through, did so with the most convincing victory of the day. The Swedish senior defeated Purdue’s Evan Hawkins 6-0, 6-2 to make it three victories on the day for ETSU.

The rest of the team did not fare as well, as Paul Luzardo (Maracaibo, Venezuela), Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela), Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) and the tournament’s No. 5 seed Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) all fell, but will continue to play through the weekend in the consolation draw.

The Bucs also had four duos in the doubles draw of the tournament, ending the day with the team of Bonnevalle and Ordeig in the round of 16. The pair began Thursday with a 9-8 victory over Wright State’s Jamison Clark and Hayden Joblin, before defeating Murray State’s Joao Camara and Arthur Valle 8-2. 

Second round singles action begins Friday at 8:30 a.m., with Bonnevalle scheduled as the first Buccaneer to take to the courts at 9:30 against Memphis’ David O’Hare.
