Redshirt freshman scores first collegiate goal as ETSU gains four points in A-Sun standings

MACON, Ga. (October 17, 2011) – Highlighted by a week in which he headed in his first collegiate goal, redshirt freshman Nick Dykes (Nashville, Tenn.) has been named Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

The weekly honor is the first of Dykes’ career, as ETSU has now collected five conference player of the week selections this season.

Entering the week with just three points in the conference standings, the Bucs awaited two home matches against Stetson, the team they defeated in the A-Sun championship game last year, and Florida Gulf Coast, last year’s A-Sun regular season champions.

Dykes came up with a massive defensive performance in those two games. The redshirt freshman started both contests, playing 179 minutes, helping ETSU to a shutout draw against Stetson and a, 2-1, victory over FGCU.

With the Bucs trailing the Eagles 1-0 at the start of the second half, Dykes headed home a corner kick from Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) in the 53rd minute for the equalizer. The goal was Dykes’ first of his career and the first ETSU has scored against FGCU since defeating the Eagles, 3-0, on October 16, 2009.

Minutes later, sophomore David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) sent in the game-winner and the Bucs walked away with three points in a, 2-1, victory. The loss snapped FGCU’s 12-game conference winning streak, and was the Eagles’ first in conference play since falling, 1-0, to Stetson in the their final game of the 2009 season.

Dykes and the ETSU men’s soccer team now sit in a tie for fifth place in the A-Sun standings, and will look to get back to .500 in conference play against Mercer on Friday, October 22, at 7 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
