ETSU moves up to 10th at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (October 15, 2011) – The ETSU men’s golf team posted a solid 290 (+2) to move up to 10th on day two of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Saturday.

The Bucs improved by 23 shots from day one to day two. Freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) had the most dramatic improvement on day two as he followed up an opening round 81 with a team-best 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 33rd. Gibson recorded six birdies on the day.

N.C. State remains in the lead despite struggling a bit in round two with an 8-over 296. The Wolfpack now lead by just a shot over second place Virginia at 7-over-par. The Cavaliers shot a 1-over 289 on Saturday and sit at 8-over for the tournament. Memphis sits in third at 11-over, while Wake Forest (+14) and Kent State (+15) round out the top-five.

Clemson had the best score of the day as the Tigers shot a 281 (-7) to move all the way up to sixth place at 18-over. Clemson was tied for 13th after the opening round. Missouri (+19) is in seventh, followed by Tennessee (+20), UNC Wilmington (+26) and ETSU to round out the top-10. Meanwhile, Villanova (+32), Toledo (+33), Louisville (+36), Virginia Tech (+41) and Army (+58) conclude the scoring after round two.  

Mark McMillen of N.C. State remains in the lead on the individual leaderboard after following up an opening round 68 with a solid even-par 72 to sit at 4-under (68-72—140). McMillen’s fellow teammate Albin Choi is in second at 2-under-par (72-70—142). Jonathan Fly of Memphis, Jace Long of Missouri and Denny McCarthy of Virginia are the only other players in the field below-par as they sit at 1-under for the tournament.

Redshirt senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) also improved from the first day as he also shot under-par on Saturday. Enoch followed his opening round of 76 with a 1-under par 71. Enoch currently leads the Buccaneer scoring as he is tied for 14th.

Freshman Sam Edwards (Bigbury, England) shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for 46th after opening the tournament with an 81.

Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) and Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) recorded rounds of 76 and 77, respectively for the Bucs. Lawson is tied for 56th and Pugh is tied for 43rd with one round to play.

The final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club will begin tomorrow with players teeing off on both the 1st and 10th tees. ETSU will get its round underway beginning at 9:50 a.m. on the 10th tee and will be paired with Villanova and Toledo.
