Newcomers lead the way for ETSU women’s golf at Lady Pirate
Monday, October 10, 2011
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2011) – Freshman Grabrielle Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) finished tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard and junior transfer Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) posted an impressive 3-under-par 69 to power the ETSU women’s golf team on the first day of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Monday at the Greenville Country Club.
The event, which was scheduled for two rounds of action on the first day and will conclude with third and final round play on Tuesday, is being led by No. 40 East Carolina. Wahl, Garner and the rest of the Buccaneers finished the day seventh in the team competition, 15 strokes back of ECU.
Individually, Wahl was impressive and finished the day at 2-under 142 (72-70). She is currently three strokes back of UNC Greensboro’s Fannie Cnops, who leads the event at 139. Meanwhile, Garner rebounded from a 9-over 81 during the first round to post a season-best 3-under 69 in the day’s second round, and finished tied for 31st.
“Gabriella and Chloe had tremendous second rounds out there,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “But the team score is based on four people, not just two. We need a solid team effort to make a move on the team leaderboard.”
Other ETSU results included a tie for 42nd by sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England). No other ETSU player finished better than a tie for 62nd.
