Monday, October 03, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2011) – With five players finishing in the Top 25 on the individual leaderboard, the ETSU women’s golf team got the across-the-board effort it needed and surged into the lead Monday during second round play in the Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Starmount Country Club.
Senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain), who remains in contention for the tournament’s individual championship after posting a 76 on Monday, finished the day four strokes back of the event leader and in sole possession of fourth place. Vizcarrondo is currently at 148 for the tournament, while Georgia State’s Charlotte Lorentzen is the leader at 144.
As a team, the Bucs posted the lowest team score of the day at 302 and lead by five strokes over Atlantic Coast Conference member Maryland. As a team, the Bucs are at 606 for the event (304-302).
“This team has shown great resilience and continues to impress me with their mentality on the course,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We plan on leading many tournaments this year and finishing first. Tomorrow will be another round of golf and I have a great deal of confidence in this team.”
Vizcarrondo was not alone in her efforts on Monday, as teammates Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) actually posted the Bucs’ low rounds of the day with scores of 3-over-par 74. Those rounds moved Evans from a tie for 25th to a tie for 10th, while Steinfeldt moved from a tied for 52nd to a tie for 24th.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 20th by freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), while junior transfer Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) finished tied for 24th.
