Men’s Tennis prepares for final day in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (October 1, 2011) Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Kennesaw State’s Alex Toliver (6-4. 6-4) in the semifinals of the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic, on Saturday, to play his way through to the final of the singles gold flight main draw.

Ribeiro will take on Memphis’ Daniel Schindler in the finals on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Teaming with sophomore Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venzuela) in the doubles blue flight, Ribeiro and Varon defeated the Tiger duo of Cedric and Henry (9-8(3)) to advance to that final as well.

In singles play, Varon lost in the gold flight’s second round yesterday, but won both of his matches on Saturday to earn his place in the consolation finals. Varon defeated Richard Gamble (6-4, 6-4) of Lee University, before taking out Jacksonville State’s Felipe Diaz (7-5, 6-4) in his afternoon semifinal match.

Like Ribeiro, Varon will take on another Tiger in KC Grifin for the consolation title on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Sophomore Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) began Saturday in the quarterfinals of the singles blue flight main draw, taking on South Florida’s Lucas Marin. Having not dropped a set in the tournament, Ordeig dropped two against Marin (6-2, 6-3) to fall from the main draw.

Junior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) began the tournament in the blue flight with Ordeig, but began Saturday in the flight’s consolation bracket after a second round loss on Friday. Ramirez bounced back to first defeat David Henry of Memphis (6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(8)) before receiving a bye and facing Marcec Nenad of Jacksonville State in the consolation semifinals. Playing two competitive sets, Ramirez battled but could not defeat Nenad, falling (6-4, 6-4).

Ordeig and Ramirez were also in action as a doubles team, but fell to Lee’s Gamble and Yokosuk (8-4) to drop from the gold doubles flight.
