Atlantic Sun play in full swing as ETSU heads for the Music City

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (September 29, 2011) – The ETSU women’s soccer team heads for Nashville this weekend, as the Lady Bucs get back into conference play against Lipscomb on Friday in the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m. before battling Belmont on Sunday inside E.S. Rose Park at 1 p.m.

ETSU (6-3-0, 1-0-0 A-Sun) began conference play last weekend when they welcomed USC Upstate into Summers-Taylor Stadium and shutout the Spartans, 4-0. The Lady Bucs went up in the eighth minute when freshman Jenna Caudle (Middletown, Md.) buried her team-leading sixth goal of the year, as ETSU spread the wealth with goals from sophomore Samantha Kron (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and freshmen Taylor Maxson (Lewisville, Texas) and Kristi Davis (Edmond, Okla.).

On Sunday, ETSU played its final non-conference match of the year and shutout its second-consecutive opponent in UNC Asheville, 3-0. Senior Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) scored twice to record her second multi-goal game of the season, and sophomore Lucy Goffe (Birmingham, England) added her second goal of the year off a Kron corner. The assist was Kron’s third off corner kicks this year.

Posting two shutouts and making 11 saves through the weekend, senior goalkeeper Caitlin Gaughan (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors. It was Gaughan’s first defensive player of the week honor, and the first for a Lady Buc since Rachel Van Horn did so the week of October 15, 2007.

Heading into the weekend, the Lady Bucs lead the A-Sun multiple offensive and defensive categories. ETSU is first in the A-Sun in goals (25), assists (22) and points (72), while ranking second in goals allowed (8) and goals against average (0.85).

Caudle and Petersen have combined for nine goals and four assists to lead the Lady Bucs’ attack. With a goal against Upstate and an assist against Asheville, Caudle is currently riding a point-scoring streak of seven-consecutive games.

Lipscomb (2-8-1, 0-2-0 A-Sun) kicked off its conference schedule last weekend with road games against Mercer and Kennesaw State, but dropped both while being outscored by a combined 7-0. With the two losses, the Lady Bisons have now dropped five straight games – their last win coming Sept. 9 against Southern Mississippi, 3-1.

Meghan McGuire leads the Lady Bisons with four goals, but has not scored since netting two goals in the match against Southern Mississippi.

Belmont (5-4-0, 2-0-0 A-Sun) heads into the weekend as winners of three straight games, including a 2-0 mark to start the conference season. The Bruins defeated Kennesaw State on Friday, 2-1, before traveling to Mercer and taking down the Bears, 1-0, on Sunday for their first win over Mercer in program history.

Alex Morgado played hero in the Mercer game, winning the match with a header in the 96th minute. The goal was Morgado’s second of the season to trail the team-leader, Taylor Smith, by one goal.
