Tuesday, September 20, 2011
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 20, 2011) – Carding one of the lowest team scores of the day, the ETSU women’s golf team moved up six spots on the leaderboard and ultimately enjoyed a solid sixth place finish Tuesday in its season-opening tournament at the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup hosted by the Cardinal Club Golf Course.
The Bucs were led by 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and A-Sun first-team selection Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), who got her sophomore campaign started in style with a fifth place finish on the individual leaderboard. Evans ended the event 5-over-par 149 (76-73), just four strokes back of individual medalist Julia Strandberg of East Carolina.
ETSU, which finished at 614 as a team, finished play 18 strokes back of team champion N.C. State. The Wolfpack edged East Carolina by two strokes for the victory.
“This team has a huge amount of potential to take our program to the next level and we showed that today,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “Our goal today was to fight back for a solid finish and we beat several quality teams. This tournament has been a great opportunity to evaluate where we are and where we want to go, and I feel like now we just learned how to get there.
“Playing smart, patient golf is going to be the key to our success this year.”
Along with Evans, the Bucs also got a strong showing from sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany), who made the largest individual jump of any ETSU player on Tuesday, moving from a tie for 51st on Monday to a finish of 36th. In addition, junior transfer Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) tied for 41st and 49th, respectively.
The Bucs will return to action on Oct. 2 at the Starmount Classic in Greensboro, N.C. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the season, including complete updates following every competitive round, visit ETSUBucs.com.
