CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (September 9, 2011) – Junior Kayla Williams (El Paso, Texas) recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs to
lead the ETSU volleyball team past UNC Asheville, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-23), Friday morning to open the Country Inn & Suites Invitational at Maclellan

ETSU improves to 4-5 on the season with the victory, while UNC Asheville falls to 3-5 on the young season.

Williams was just two blocks away from recording a triple-double as she also added three kills for the match. In addition, the 37 assists were match and season-highs. Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with a match-high 18 kills on 48 attempts, with just four miscues for a .292 hitting percentage. She also added eight digs and two blocks. Devine has recorded 10 or more kills in eight of the team's nine matches thus far. Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) also had a strong performance as she recorded a season-high 10 kills on 16 attempts, with just one error for a .562 hitting percentage. Hardy also added five blocks in the match.  Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the ETSU defense with a match-high 20 digs. Katie Muey (Alexandria, Ind.) and Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) each recorded double-digit dig totals.

The Bucs out-hit UNC Asheville .209 to .107, while also gaining a 47-32 advantage in kills. ETSU also out-blocked the Bulldogs 12-4.

In the opening set, ETSU was in control early on until UNC Asheville tied the match up at 8-8. After an ETSU attack error put the Bulldogs in front at 9-8, the two teams traded the next several points until ETSU reeled off five straight points to take a 15-10 advantage. ETSU would not relinquish the lead as a Devine kill clinched the set, 25-22. Devine and Hardy had six kills apiece to lead the Bucs offensively in the set. ETSU out-blocked UNCA, 5-1, in the frame.

UNC Asheville took control of the second set from the very start. The Bulldogs led by as much as five points on several occasions. However, with UNCA up 19-14, ETSU rallied to cut the lead to 19-17, forcing a UNC Asheville timeout. The Bucs eventually tied the match up at 21-21 following a kill by senior Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.). ETSU took the next two points as well thanks to kills by Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) and Devine, putting the Bucs in front 23-21. The set ended with back to back kills from Rice and Gesell, giving ETSU the set win at 25-22.

In the third set, UNC Asheville jumped out to a strong start once again by earning a quick 9-5 advantage. The lead was short lived once again; however, as ETSU reeled off an incredible 10-0 run to take a commanding 19-12 lead. Tamblyn recorded all three of her match-high service aces during the sequence. UNC Asheville tried to make a run by cutting the lead to one on two separate occasions late in the match, but ETSU held on for the victory thanks to a match ending kill by Hardy.

ETSU returns to action in the Country Inn & Suites Invitational this evening against host Chattanooga at 6 p.m. Live stats and live video are available at GoMocs.com.
