Women’s tennis will look to continue success with the addition of Brumit

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 27, 2011) – ETSU Director of Tennis Yaser Zaatini has announced the signing of Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) for the 2011-12 season.

“When we’re able to keep a local kid at ETSU, I consider that a major victory,” said Zaatini. “Jessica is a well-known player that’s always willing to work hard, and is an outstanding student. She understands what kind of program we’re running and I couldn’t be happier she decided to come to ETSU.”

Born and raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., and a recent graduate of Elizabethton High School, Brumit will tote both academic and athletic accolades to the ETSU women’s tennis team.

In 2008, Brumit finished runner-up in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Girls’ Doubles State Championship. The following year, Brumit was the U16 girls’ champion of both the 2009 Tennessee State Open Junior Championship as well as the Closed Junior Championship. Brumit has also finished runner-up in both the 2010 and 2011 TSSAA Class A-AA Girls’ Singles State Championship.

Brumit’s academic standing will also render the already outstanding academic status of ETSU women’s tennis. Coming off their fifth Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award in the last seven years, the women’s tennis team will look to achieve the honor once again with the help of Brumit’s 4.0 high school GPA, which includes honors courses.

“We have high expectations for our student-athletes to get good grades, said ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant. “It starts from the parents and I think Jessica’s parents have done a great job getting her ready not only in tennis, but academically as well."

Brumit’s signing marks the first for the 2011-12 ETSU women’s tennis recruiting class. She joins five returners from last year’s Atlantic Sun Championship team including Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP, Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela).
