ETSU, Golden Eagles to open season on Friday, Nov. 11

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (June 21, 2011) - The WNIT committee released its pairings for the 18th annual Preseason Tournament on Tuesday afternoon, and the ETSU women's basketball team will host in-state foe Tennessee Tech on Friday, Nov. 11. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

The Lady Bucs, who are coming off a program-best sixth consecutive winning season (19-12), also appeared in the 2007 Preseason Tournament. ETSU returns nine letterwinners from last season's club, including All-Atlantic Sun selection Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.), who led the team in rebounding (9.0) and was second in scoring (14.5) as a freshman. Joining Mitchell are seniors Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Gwen Washington (Manassas, Va.), along with red-shirt senior Tarita Gordon (Wichita, Kan.).

"It's very exciting to be playing in the Preseason WNIT, but it's also an honor to be hosting a first round game," commented head coach Karen Kemp, who begins her 18th season at ETSU in 2011-12. "Tennessee Tech won the OVC regular season championship last season, so we are going to have our hands full come Nov. 11."

This will mark the 23rd game in the series, but the first since the Lady Bucs defeated the Golden Eagles, 81-77, back on Nov. 19, 2004 in Cookeville. Despite the four-point win, ETSU trails the all-time series, 19-3.

Tennessee Tech posted a 23-8 record in 2010-11 en route to capturing the regular season Ohio Valley Conference championship. The Golden Eagles lost to UT-Martin in the conference championship game and fell to Auburn in the Postseason WNIT.

The winner of the ETSU/Tennessee Tech game will face the winner of UCLA/McNeese State on Sunday Nov. 13 or Monday, Nov. 14. Meanwhile, the eight teams who lose their first round game will be re-grouped into "Consolation bracket quads," which result in two four-team pools. One team in each pool will be selected to host the other three teams. The host site will be announced after the first round games are completed on Nov. 11.
