JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 2, 2011) - ETSU women's soccer head coach Adam Sayers announced the addition of former Middle Tennessee State University standout Debs Brereton to the women's soccer coaching staff on Thursday.

Brereton joins the Buccaneer women's soccer staff as an assistant coach after spending the last three seasons as a graduate assistant on the Blue Raider women's soccer staff. She was involved in various aspects of the program from player development to on-field training at MTSU.

While working on the Blue Raider staff, Brereton helped guide the 2010 team to the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance as MTSU won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament after finishing second in the league with a 9-2 record.

"We are very excited that Debs has joined our staff," Sayers said. "She has excelled and won championships as a player and a coach at this level, so her experience will be a great asset to our program. Not only is she a very knowledgeable coach, but she is a great role model for all young female players. Her hiring completes our staff and we are now very focused on planning for this fall and beyond."

Brereton played just one season for Middle Tennessee in 2004 after transferring from Northeastern State, but that one season proved to be one of the greatest in program history. She became the program's first - and only - Sun Belt Player of the Year after setting what was then the school record for goals in a season with 19. She also set the then single-season points record with 47, and her nine assists also are tied for fourth on the single-season chart. Though she played for just one season at Middle Tennessee, Brereton still is among career leaders for points and goals, ranking ninth in each category.

In 2004, she not only was named the Sun Belt's Player of the Year, but she also earned first-team All-Sun Belt accolades and was named to the All-Sun Belt Tournament Team. Brereton was a three-time Sun Belt Player of the Week in 2004 - the most ever by a Blue Raider player in a season.
Her strong play helped lead Middle Tennessee to a share of the 2004 Sun Belt championship, its first conference title. She was named to the Sun Belt's 30-year Anniversary Team and earned a spot on the Soccer Buzz All-Central Region Team.

Prior to accepting the GA position at MTSU, Brereton served as an assistant soccer coach at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., for the 2007 campaign.

Brereton played three seasons in the W-League and the WPSL prior to starting her coaching career. She led the San Diego Sunwaves to the W-League Western Conference Championship in 2007 as they went 8-3-1.

A native of Middlesbrough, England, Brereton led the WPSL's Tennessee Lady Blues with seven goals in six matches in 2006, helping them finish second in the Midwest Division. In 2005, she scored three goals in two games for the W-League's Hampton Roads Piranhas before suffering a season-ending injury.

Brereton owns a UEFA Level Two Coaching License, as well as a USSF National "C" License. This spring, Brereton earned a Master of Science in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Recreation from MTSU. She completed her eligibility at Middle Tennessee in 2004 and earned her bachelor's degree in 2005.
