Calabrese adds nine in 2011 recruiting class

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 18, 2011) -East Tennessee State University head men's soccer coach Scott Calabrese announced Wednesday the addition of nine new players who will join the Buccaneers for 2011. The Bucs will be looking to add further momentum to a program already on the rise after winning the Atlantic Sun tournament championship and securing a berth in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

"I am extremely happy with the quality of players we are bringing in for next season," said Calabrese. "We have a good blend of domestic and foreign players who will complement our already talented roster. Competition for places in the line-up will be fierce and it's important we continue to progress as a program. We had success last year, but the best teams are able to maintain a consistently high level of success over a number of years and ultimately this is our goal."

The new class of Buccaneers includes players from Tennessee and Texas as well as Ireland, England, Germany, Bermuda, and Brazil.

Below is a breakdown of each recruit.

Ryan Coulter - GK - Dublin, Ireland / University of San Diego

Coulter, who transferred to ETSU from the University of San Diego, has already been enrolled on campus this spring in Johnson City. Coulter played one season at USD and is a former member of the Irish Universities National Team. In addition, Coulter played at the World University Games in 2009.

Sameth Al-Basith - M - London, England / Cardiff City FC Academy

Al-Basith joins ETSU from Cardiff City Football club where he has been a member of the U18 Academy team for the past two years, which plays in the FA Academy League. Prior to joining Cardiff, Al-Basith was a member of the West Ham Youth Academy until the age of 16.

Shumaker comes to ETSU after an outstanding career at Chattanooga Christian School. The Tennessee native saw him named Chattanooga Player of the Year in 2010 as well as first team all-state and district player of the year. Shumaker had 30 goals and eight assists on his way to helping CCS to a second-place finish at the state championship.

Triston Hall - M - Southampton, Bermuda / Montverde Academy

Hall joins the Bucs after playing at Montverde Academy in Florida. Hall is a starting midfielder who helped MVA to a record of 24-0-1 in 2011, while also capturing the ESPN Rise Fab 50 High School National Championship. Nationally, Montverde finished No. 1 nationally.

Kade Morgan - F - Columbia, Tenn. / Columbia Academy

Prior to coming to ETSU, Morgan played for the perennial Tennessee power Brentwood Soccer Club. Morgan was also a pivotal member at Columbia Academy where he attained all-conference, district and all-regional honors on numerous occasions from 2007-2010.

Simon Schroettle - D - Rain, Germany / Gymnasium Donauwoerth

Schroettle spent time playing for FC Augsburg in Germany where he captained the team's U19 Bundesliga team. In 2010, Schroettle was a key component in helping Augsburg get promoted from the Bayersliga to the U19 Bundesliga.

Hoyl was the 2011 captain at Highland Park High School where he landed all-district honors as a defender.  At the club level, Hoyl played for Andromeda Soccer club and helped them win the U19 North Texas Classic League in 2011.

Pedro Zaccarelli - D/M - Sao Paulo, Brazil / Montverde Academy

Zaccarelli hails from the same stomping grounds as Triston Hall (Montverde Academy). Zaccarelli was the starting left back, and played an integral role in helping MVA finish with an undefeated season (24-0-1) and the school's first-ever ESPN Rise Fab 50 National Championship.
