ETSU men's hoops earns NCAA APR recognition
Tuesday, May 17, 2011
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 17, 2011) â€" The ETSU men’s basketball team earned a special public recognition on Tuesday, as the Buccaneers ranked among the Top 10 percent of the nation’s programs in the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rate.
This award for the APR â€" which was developed by the NCAA as an innovative way to determine the academic culture in each sport by measuring on-going eligibility, retention and graduation each semester â€" is given every year based on the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate.
“We are proud of this recognition because we work hard at this and are very serious about each player in our program doing well academically â€" and ultimately getting their degree,” said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. “We recruit prospects who want to graduate and this is discussed at length during the recruitment process. Once they get here, we have a good system in place that includes our coaching staff monitoring each player carefully, and we are very fortunate to have academic experts like Bob Baker and his excellent staff of tutors and mentors who assist our players.
“Bottom line, though, we have players who want to get a degree and they work very hard to get that done.”
Baker, who is the program’s assistant athletic director for academic services, said it’s certainly a matter of cooperation between players, coaches and support staff.
“Make no mistake about it, retaining and graduating student-athletes is our department’s primary mission,” Baker said. “So this public recognition by the NCAA is very gratifying to me as it indicates that we are meeting our mission. Coach Bartow and his staff are great recruiters and mentors to their student-athletes and also great for me and my staff to work with in helping these young men successful off of the court.”
Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 24. That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams and head coach APRs.
The most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years. Top-performing teams this year posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on the number of perfect scores.
