RALEIGH, N.C. (May 7, 2011) - Sophomore right-hander Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) allowed just two hits in throwing his first career shutout as the ETSU baseball team blanked North Carolina State in a pitcher's duel Saturday night at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C. to take the series.
The win is the eighth straight for the Bucs (30-15, 12-10 A-Sun) who are one victory away from tying the school record of nine consecutive wins.
Bushey faced just four batters over the minimum as the Richmond, Va. native was lights out for ETSU. The sophomore improved to 5-3 on the year after striking out six with three free passes. The complete game is the second of the series for ETSU as John Long (Anderson, S.C.) posted a four-hitter the previous night.
N.C. State starter Cory Mazzoni was equally as impressive going 8.2 innings holding the potent Buccaneer offense to just two runs on five hits while striking out nine in the loss.
Senior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) gave ETSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he plated Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.)  from third on a sacrifice fly to left to give ETSU a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the ninth, catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) deposited his second home run of the series over the fence in right as he crushed a 1-0 fastball well over 400 feet to increase the Buccaneer advantage to 2-0. The homer was the 12th of the season for the local product.
The Bucs look to complete the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they face N.C. State in the series finale.
